What do we believe as members of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)?
As Disciples, we believe first and foremost that Jesus is the Son of
the Living God who offers saving grace to us all. Secondly, we believe
that all persons are children of God.
Open Communion: The
Lord's Supper or Communion is celebrated each week during our Worship
Service. This is open to all believers regardless of denominational
affiliation or church membership.
The ministry of believers:
Disciples believe in a Priesthood of all believers. What that means is
lay persons and ordained clergy alike are central to the spiritual
formation of each church ministry. The importance of both is paramount.
Freedom of belief:
Disciples value freedom of belief and diversity of opinions. Disciples
are called together around on eessential of faith: belief in Jesus
Christ as Lord and Savior. Persons are free to follow their consciences
guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, and study and prayer. We are also
called to love one another regardless of our stances on other issues.
As Disciples we are to respect the diversity with which God places on
each of our hearts. We are to embrace this diversity rather than trying
to conform to a perceived notion of what is right or better. In doing
this , we are all able to come to the table equally blessed and called
by our Lord.
Baptism by immersion:
In baptism the old self-centered life is set aside, and a new life of
trust in God begins. Although Disciples practice baptism by immersion,
other baptism traditions are honored.
Belief in the oneness of the church: All Christians are called to be one in Christ and to seek opportunities for common witness and service.
